Lido captured only 5.7% of Ethereum’s net staking growth in the first half of 2026, indicating a challenge for Ethereum institutional staking. 7% of Ethereum’s net staking growth during the first half of 2026. This stark figure signals a significant challenge for the protocol, as its market share continues to shrink amidst a booming landscape for Ethereum institutional staking.

Overall, the Ethereum network witnessed substantial expansion, yet Lido’s share of total staked ETH declined from 23.93% at the beginning of the year to 21.18% by June 30, 2026. This dynamic puts pressure on Lido’s LDO token holders and raises questions about the protocol’s ability to convert a growing market into sustainable Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) income.

Lido’s shrinking foothold in the staking market

Lido added 386,000 ETH to its protocol in the first half of 2026, increasing its total from 8.74 million ETH to 9.13 million ETH. However, this growth represented only a fraction of the network’s total increase of 6.8 million ETH during the same period.

The discrepancy highlights a critical dilution effect: as the overall Ethereum staking market expanded, Lido’s relative position diminished. This trend marks a notable shift, especially as institutional investors increasingly turn their attention to Ethereum as a staking asset.

Institutional capital shifts balance

A significant factor in Lido’s declining share is the redirection of institutional capital into alternative staking avenues. The institutional segment of staking expanded dramatically in H1 2026, growing from 25.9% to 35.3% of the total market.

Lido’s own H1 report points to this phenomenon, noting that much of its market share dilution occurred as institutional funds flowed into other platforms. Institutions can generate Ethereum staking rewards through various providers without incurring Lido’s protocol fees.

Challenges for Lido’s automated buyback mechanism

The financial implications of Lido’s market share erosion are visible in its automated buyback mechanism, NEST. On September 9, 2026, NEST recorded a cumulative negative budget of approximately $517,024, leading to a skipped allocation for LDO token purchases.

This deficit underscores a fundamental business challenge: generating sufficient DAO income to fund these automated purchases. While funding was present, NEST’s rules require a cumulative surplus to accrue before buybacks can be financed, demonstrating a bottleneck in its operational capacity.

Fee waivers and revenue pressures

Lido’s strategy to attract institutional clients includes a fee waiver for certain offerings. For instance, eligible stVaults retain a 0% Lido infrastructure fee until October 31, 2026. This incentivises adoption but yields zero revenue from the waived fees in the short term.

The protocol’s unaudited H1 accounts showed $27.51 million in gross staking revenue, but only $15.71 million in net staking revenue after deductions. Total net DAO revenue, including Earn, stood at $15.94 million, with an effective DAO share of staking rewards at 6.15%.

Ethereum’s booming institutional staking landscape

Despite Lido’s internal struggles, the broader Ethereum staking ecosystem is thriving, especially within the institutional sector. As of early September 2026, a record 34% of the total ETH supply, roughly 41.4 million ETH, is now locked in staking contracts.

This growth in Ethereum is partly fueled by substantial new institutional money, including significant inflows into US spot Ethereum Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). These ETFs have seen approximately $1.74 billion over three weeks in September 2026 alone.

Driving factors for institutional adoption

Corporate treasuries are increasingly staking ETH at scale, recognizing it as a primary earnings driver. Bitmine, for example, reported that 98% of its income came directly from staking activities.

Major financial entities are also integrating Ethereum staking solutions. WisdomTree launched an Ethereum ETP in Europe, while VanEck filed for its own Ethereum ETF. Additionally, Anchorage integrated custody for stETH in July 2026, and Fidelity has added Ethereum staking options for its clients.

Strategic positioning amidst growing competition

Lido’s declining market share is also a consequence of increased competition. Rivals such as Rocket Pool and staking solutions offered directly by major exchanges like Coinbase have intensified the battle for institutional and retail stakers.

While Lido remains the largest single provider, holding 8.83 million staked ETH and representing a 20.9% market share in August 2026, its dominance in the broader Ethereum staking market has waned. Its peak market share of 32% in 2023 has steadily eroded.

Navigating centralization concerns and technical hurdles

The Ethereum community prioritizes decentralization, and Lido’s significant control over validators has raised concerns about centralization. The protocol’s Curated Module alone holds 90% of staked ETH, prompting ongoing debate within the ecosystem.

Adding to these challenges, Lido faced a technical issue with a vulnerability in the RageQuit mechanism of its “Dual Governance” (DG) system, though no user funds were reportedly affected. The protocol has also undergone organizational restructuring, including a 15% reduction in its contributor team to streamline operations and adapt to market shifts.

The path forward for Lido’s DAO income

For LDO token holders, the crucial indicators for future value are the stake generating fees, the DAO’s retained reward share, and the cumulative budget available for token purchases. The current environment demands that institutional growth translates into profitable terms for Lido.

Lido has demonstrated that institutional engagement can still occur on its platform, with Sharplink deploying $200 million of ETH through its protocol, holding wstETH with Anchorage Digital. However, the product choice dictates the fees the DAO can earn, influencing overall income.

Balancing adoption with profitability

The validator queue on September 9, 2026, showed 1,931,206 ETH waiting to activate, with an estimated delay of 33 days and 13 hours. This queue imposes different costs on new deposits versus existing liquid positions or migrating validators.

For Lido, the strategic challenge lies in whether its liquidity and migration options can attract and retain balances under terms that consistently generate DAO income. The ability to win deposits and earn income from them remains two distinct commercial steps in a highly competitive market.
