However, staking rewards aren’t static; they fluctuate daily based on network congestion and priority fees. Periods of increased network traffic typically drive up fees, potentially leading to higher staking rewards for validators.

It’s also worth noting that the staking reward rate has generally trended lower over time as the total supply of staked Ethereum has increased. More participants sharing the rewards means a smaller slice for each.

Kleros founder Clément Lesaege, under the username clesaege, presented this “Validator Redirected Revenue” on the Ethereum Research forum. He suggested that validators could collectively vote on whether to implement such a redirection of funds.

The proposal met with significant pushback from various figures within the crypto community. Prominent crypto attorney Gabriel Shapiro, for instance, warned against the move, arguing it would inject undesirable political considerations into the consensus layer of the network.

Shapiro further cautioned that on-chain governance mechanisms designed for such “devmines” or “taxes” rarely prove effective in practice. Critics fear that such a system could centralize power or lead to unforeseen governance challenges, undermining Ethereum’s core principles of decentralization and neutrality.
