The Midnight Network, a privacy-focused blockchain developed by Input Output Global (IOG), is preparing to open smart contract deployment on its mainnet. This significant development, confirmed on September 19, 2026, by Input Output Global (IOG) and Cardano developer Sebastien Guillemot, is expected to substantially enhance the utility of Midnight’s native NIGHT token.

Developers will soon be able to build privacy-preserving applications, including those that mint custom private tokens.

Output Global for private smart contracts

Sebastien Guillemot, who serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Midnight Foundation, expressed considerable excitement about the imminent launch of private smart contracts. This move is a pivotal step for the network, which aims to provide a privacy-first complement to Cardano’s main chain, attracting developers seeking robust confidentiality features.

The impending smart contract functionality on Midnight’s mainnet is a cornerstone of its privacy-by-design architecture. Input Output Global (IOG) has confirmed the activation is drawing near, aligning with the network’s mission to support applications requiring stringent data confidentiality without compromising on-chain verification.

Developers will write these smart contracts in Compact, a TypeScript-based domain-specific language. This choice is deliberate, designed to simplify the creation of privacy-preserving smart contracts and make the ecosystem more accessible to a broader range of developers. It underscores Midnight’s commitment to ease of use alongside advanced security.

Crucially, Midnight utilizes zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to enable programmable privacy. This technology allows sensitive information to remain private while its validity is independently confirmed on-chain, offering a unique blend of discretion and verifiable integrity. The network already handles over 1.2 million transactions, showcasing its operational capacity.

The network currently operates within the Kūkolu phase, a federated mainnet environment. This controlled production setting allows ecosystem partners to maintain stability during rapid development cycles, ensuring a smooth rollout for the first production decentralised applications (dApps). Such blockchain protocol upgrades are crucial for ecosystem maturity.

Driving Utility for the NIGHT Token

The activation of Midnight Network smart contracts is anticipated to significantly boost the utility of its native NIGHT token. As of September 19, 2026, NIGHT’s price saw a 5.18% increase over 24 hours, trading at $0.02437. This market reaction reflects investor optimism surrounding the network’s expanded capabilities.

NIGHT serves as the unshielded utility token for the network, facilitating governance and the generation of DUST. DUST is the essential resource required to power transactions on the Midnight network, with each NIGHT token able to generate up to 5 DUST over a seven-day period, accruing linearly.

The token’s market capitalization stood at approximately $404.75 million on September 19, 2026, with a 24-hour trading volume of $19.47 million. Its fully diluted valuation reached $584.92 million, reflecting the total value if all 24 billion tokens were in circulation. Approximately 16.6 billion tokens were circulating on that date.

A thawing schedule for NIGHT tokens continues through the end of 2026, with 25% installments unlocking every 90 days. The final thawing period is expected in late November or December 2026. This controlled release mechanism aims to manage market supply as the network develops.

Midnight’s Place in the Broader Cardano Ecosystem

Midnight Network operates as a vital partner chain within the broader Cardano ecosystem, developed by Input Output Global (IOG). Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, stated that Midnight is undergoing a major upgrade to “turn on apps,” alongside other significant projects like RealFi, expected next month, and Pogen, anticipated within 90 days.

Hoskinson has also cautioned against persistent criticism of major ecosystem projects like Midnight. He suggested that such negativity could potentially deter developers from engaging with Cardano, highlighting the importance of community support for technological advancement. This sentiment resonates across many institutional blockchain adoption initiatives.

The integration between Cardano and Midnight is further solidified by an upcoming bridge. Stage 1, allowing NIGHT tokens to move from Cardano to Midnight, is expected shortly after the mainnet launch. A subsequent Stage 2 will introduce two-way support, enabling transfers from Midnight back to Cardano, following extensive mainnet-level testing.

Midnight’s mainnet achieved its genesis block on March 17, 2026, at 3:17 AM UTC, with its official launch for state continuity and permanence occurring on March 30, 2026. These foundational milestones underscore a steady progression towards its current advanced state and readiness for smart contract functionality.

Practical Applications and Enterprise Focus

Midnight Network’s programmable privacy features position it as a key player for sectors where data protection is paramount. Use cases span financial services, healthcare data systems, and digital identity solutions. It also extends to artificial intelligence data processing, where confidential data often needs secure verification without full disclosure.

Strategic collaborations further solidify Midnight’s enterprise appeal. The network has partnered with Google Cloud for enterprise-grade security and infrastructure, demonstrating a commitment to robust operational standards. This collaboration helps ensure the reliability and scalability needed for demanding applications.

A recent integration saw Morpho launch lending markets on Base, incorporating Midnight’s fixed-rate, fixed-term loan protocol, branded as “Midnight markets,” as of September 18, 2026. This development showcases the immediate, real-world utility of Midnight’s underlying technology in decentralised finance. Moreover, its AURA (Authority Round) consensus mechanism, a proof-of-authority algorithm, provides a stable and secure environment.

The mainnet validators for Midnight include a diverse group of institutional-grade operators. These encompass Google Cloud, MoneyGram, Worldpay, Bullish, Pairpoint by Vodafone, eToro, AlphaTON Capital, Blockdaemon, and Shielded Technologies. This federated model ensures a high level of security and decentralisation from key players.

The Path Forward: Development Milestones and Outlook

The journey to this smart contract deployment has involved several crucial milestones. The NIGHT token initially launched in the Hilo phase on December 4, 2025, on Cardano. This was followed by the Glacier Drop, which distributed over 4.5 billion NIGHT tokens across more than 170,000 addresses spanning eight blockchain ecosystems, building a broad initial user base.

The impending opening of Midnight Network smart contracts represents a major advancement from architecture into tangible, usable infrastructure. Dave, a Cardano DRep, highlighted this transition, calling it a “huge milestone for Midnight.” This suggests a shift from theoretical capabilities to practical, deployable solutions for developers.

This development is crucial for attracting new talent and projects to the Midnight ecosystem. The ability to mint private custom tokens, as noted by Sebastien Guillemot, opens up new avenues for decentralised finance and enterprise applications. It allows for the creation of innovative products that leverage privacy as a core feature. Secure lending protocols often rely on such advancements.

Looking ahead, the successful deployment of smart contracts on Midnight’s mainnet is likely to precede further ecosystem growth. This often includes new decentralised application (dApp) launches and potential listings on additional cryptocurrency exchanges, expanding the network’s reach and liquidity. The ultimate goal is to provide a robust, privacy-centric platform for the next generation of blockchain applications.
