Leveraged cryptocurrency traders faced a significant blow on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as Bitcoin (BTC) briefly slipped below the $80,000 threshold. This sharp downturn triggered approximately $404 million in liquidations of long positions within a mere four-hour window, underscoring the market’s inherent volatility.

The rapid price correction caught many investors off guard. The event saw hundreds of millions in bets on higher prices wiped out as Bitcoin dipped to a 9-day low of $79,750, reaching as low as $79,165 at one point during the day.

Bitcoin liquidations and swift descent

The market witnessed a rapid unwinding of positions, primarily affecting those betting on Bitcoin price increases. Of the staggering $436.44 million in total crypto liquidations observed in the four hours leading up to 1 p.m. ET, $404.15 million originated from these leveraged long bets.

These massive liquidations weren’t a gradual process; they occurred in concentrated bursts. CoinGlass data indicates that $208.21 million in long positions were liquidated in just 15 minutes from 10:15 a.m. ET, as Bitcoin dropped from around $80,640 to $80,100. Another $131.17 million followed suit in the subsequent 15 minutes from 11:15 a.m.

The sheer scale of these forced closures underscores the risks associated with bitcoin market forecasting and aggressive leveraged trading in cryptocurrency markets. Such events often exacerbate selling pressure, creating a cascade effect as margin calls force additional sales and further depress prices.

Underlying Factors Behind the Sell-off

Several converging factors contributed to Bitcoin’s slide and the subsequent wave of liquidations. Cooling demand for US spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) played a significant role in setting a bearish tone.

These ETFs recorded a substantial $773.5 million in net outflows over Thursday and Friday, October 22-23. Specifically, $635.49 million exited the funds on Thursday, followed by another $137.94 million on Friday, according to SoSoValue data. This marked a notable reversal after three days of net inflows earlier in the week. The market also saw new Bitcoin ETF filings aimed at investor protection.

Broader economic concerns and geopolitical tensions also cast a shadow over the crypto market. Uncertainty regarding US monetary policy, coupled with reports of potential fresh strikes on Iran by the US and Israel, fueled a cautious sentiment among investors. Understanding macroeconomic indicators is key to comprehending Bitcoin’s price movements.

Crypto analyst Ted Pillows highlighted low liquidity at the end of the week as another contributing factor, making the market more susceptible to sharp price movements. Furthermore, a negative Coinbase-to-Binance price index suggested a lack of strong spot demand that could otherwise have buffered the decline.

These combined pressures, including cooling ETF demand and geopolitical tensions, amplified the impact of the initial price dip, turning a correction into a more significant liquidation event.

Ether Also Experiences Substantial Losses

While Bitcoin grabbed headlines, Ether (ETH) also suffered considerable losses during the same four-hour period. Ether positions accounted for $136.72 million of the total liquidations.

This figure is remarkably close to Bitcoin’s $158.45 million in liquidations, despite Ether’s market capitalization being less than a fifth of Bitcoin’s. Long positions constituted 92.7% of Ether liquidations, reflecting a similar market sentiment to Bitcoin.

Exchanges like Binance and Hyperliquid bore the brunt of these liquidations. Binance alone accounted for $226.07 million of the four-hour total, with 96% of these being long positions. On Hyperliquid, an onchain perpetual futures exchange, $70.47 million in positions were wiped out, with an overwhelming 99.8% stemming from long bets.

Market Sentiment and Expert Commentary

The sudden market downturn prompted reactions from prominent figures in the crypto space. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes, a well-known voice in the industry, announced early Saturday that he had closed out the directional book at his family office, Maelstrom.

“I dumped it all,” Hayes wrote on X, indicating that he had taken profits on ETH, ENA, UNI, and “other shitcoins.” His decision stemmed from a belief that the market needed to “go down to go up” and his assessment of a “bit dicey” macro and geopolitical landscape.

Hayes’ move highlights how even seasoned investors are reacting to current market uncertainties. His commentary suggests a prevailing cautious outlook. He plans to “sit on the sidelines and wait for the all clear signal” before re-entering the market.

The underlying geopolitical concerns, though unspecified by Hayes, likely refer to escalating international tensions. The Associated Press reported late Friday that the State Department was reducing staff at US embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, citing increased Iranian efforts to target US personnel.

Broader Market Implications and Outlook

The weekend’s events had a tangible impact on the broader cryptocurrency market. Total liquidations over the past 24 hours soared to $815.26 million, representing a 218% increase from the previous day. This affected 227,681 traders, per CoinGlass data.

Open interest in crypto futures simultaneously fell by 2.2% to $140.10 billion over the same period. This reduction in open interest reflects a significant deleveraging across the market, as traders were forced to close their highly speculative positions.

Such large-scale liquidations serve as a stark reminder of the inherent risks in leveraged crypto trading, particularly during periods of heightened market sensitivity. The rapid decline underscores how quickly sentiment can shift and how vulnerable the market can be to cascading sell-offs.

Looking ahead, the cryptocurrency market will likely remain attentive to developments in both traditional financial markets and the geopolitical sphere. The trajectory of various crypto investment vehicles will depend heavily on sustained demand and a clearer macro-economic picture.

The performance of spot Bitcoin ETFs will be a critical indicator of institutional investor sentiment in the coming weeks. A sustained period of net outflows could signal a prolonged bearish trend, while a return to inflows could provide much-needed stability for Bitcoin and the broader crypto ecosystem.
