Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) faced their most challenging week since June 2023, recording a substantial net outflow of $1.28 billion. This significant capital withdrawal, which occurred in the week leading up to April 19, 2024, pushed the year-to-date net flow for these investment vehicles into negative territory for the first time since their launch.

The downturn coincided with a notable drop in Bitcoin’s price, which fell below the $60,000 mark during the period. Major players in the ETF space, including Grayscale, BlackRock, and Fidelity, all experienced shifts in investor activity as market sentiment turned cautious.

Bitcoin ETFs Record Significant Capital Withdrawal

The $1.28 billion net outflow from Bitcoin ETFs represents a stark reversal from the initial enthusiasm seen earlier in the year. This figure, reported by The Block, highlights a period of significant investor de-risking within the cryptocurrency sector. It marks the most substantial weekly outflow observed across the suite of spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) was particularly impacted, registering $1.1 billion in outflows during the week. This included a daily outflow of $90 million on April 17, 2024, signaling continued liquidation pressure from the converted trust. Fidelity’s FBTC also saw a notable $22.6 million in outflows on the same day.

Despite the prevailing negative trend, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) managed to attract a modest $73.4 million in inflows over the week. This indicates that while many investors were pulling capital, some continued to allocate funds to specific, well-performing products within the ETF ecosystem.

Macroeconomic Headwinds and Shifting Investor Sentiment

The substantial outflows from Bitcoin ETFs are attributed to a confluence of factors. A primary driver was the decline in Bitcoin’s price, which dipped below $60,000, triggering a wave of profit-taking and reduced confidence among investors.

Broader macroeconomic concerns also played a crucial role. A general decrease in risk appetite permeated global markets, affecting assets perceived as volatile, such as cryptocurrencies. Geopolitical tensions and evolving expectations regarding Federal Reserve interest rate policies contributed to this cautious environment.

Analysts suggest that the current “risk-off” climate, partly fueled by potential sell-offs in the AI and tech sectors, made non-yielding assets like Bitcoin less appealing. Higher interest rates typically encourage investors to favor traditional safe-haven assets or instruments offering guaranteed returns over speculative investments.

The Journey of Spot Bitcoin ETFs Since Launch

The approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on January 10, 2024, marked a watershed moment for the cryptocurrency market. Trading commenced the following day, introducing Bitcoin exposure to a wider institutional and retail audience without requiring direct ownership.

Initially, these ETFs experienced robust demand, attracting approximately $35.2 billion in net inflows during 2024 and an additional $21.4 billion in 2025. This strong uptake underscored growing institutional interest and legitimised Bitcoin as a viable asset class for diversified portfolios.

Grayscale’s GBTC, the pioneering Bitcoin fund launched in 2013, converted into a spot ETF on January 11, 2024. While its expense ratio was reduced, it remained higher than many newer competitors, contributing to its sustained outflows as investors sought lower-cost alternatives. This conversion marked a significant development for institutional Bitcoin adoption.

Bitcoin’s Price Trajectory Amid Market Volatility

Bitcoin’s price performance leading up to and during the outflow week reflects a broader period of volatility. After reaching significant peaks, including over $100,000 in December 2024 and an all-time high of over $126,000 in October 2025, the cryptocurrency entered a corrective phase.

Bitcoin opened 2026 at approximately $87,700 but saw a notable correction, falling to around $60,100 by February 6, 2026. This represented a 50% drop from its October 2025 peak. By early July 2026, the price had dipped below $60,000 before a tentative recovery later in the year.

As of November 6, 2026, Bitcoin was trading at $75,773, down nearly 40% from its all-time high. The drop below $60,000 during the week ending April 19, 2024, therefore, aligned with a broader trend of price consolidation and investor caution following previous speculative surges.

Expert Perspectives on ETF Performance and Outlook

Market analysts attribute the recent wave of outflows to a shift towards a more conservative investment stance. Factors such as elevated inflation concerns and geopolitical instability create an environment where investors are less willing to hold riskier assets. This directly impacts Bitcoin market pressure.

ETF investors, which include a significant portion of institutions and financial advisors, tend to be more price-sensitive than early Bitcoin adopters. They are often quicker to reduce their exposure during periods of drawdown and increased market volatility. This behavioral difference amplifies outflow trends.

Despite the negative sentiment reflected in ETF flows, some experts point to broader global liquidity conditions. Government deficit spending and bank credit creation, which historically support crypto prices over the long term, are still expanding. This suggests potential underlying resilience despite short-term fluctuations.

Forward-Looking Implications for Bitcoin and ETFs

The current trend of strong outflows leaves Bitcoin vulnerable to further downward pressure. This is particularly true if broader market sell-offs in technology stocks continue, creating a ripple effect across asset classes. Investors are closely watching for signs of stabilization.

If selling pressure persists, Bitcoin’s price could test key support levels. A fall below its 200-day average of $73,197 could see it target $72,000 or even dip below $70,000. This would represent a significant setback from its earlier highs and could trigger further retail sell-offs.

For Bitcoin to regain upward momentum, a cessation of ETF outflows is crucial. The price would then need to break above its 20-day average of $79,956 and subsequently its 50-day average of $82,003. Achieving these technical milestones could pave the way for a recovery towards the $85,000 mark.

Despite the recent challenges, many in the market still view spot Bitcoin ETFs as fundamentally important for Bitcoin’s long-term outlook. The requirement for ETF issuers to acquire and hold physical Bitcoin to back shares provides continuous underlying demand.

The emergence of new players with competitive fees, like Morgan Stanley’s MSBT, could also influence future inflows and market dynamics, similar to trends seen with Ethereum price dips following ETF activity.
