Some bridges utilize liquidity pools, holding reserves of both assets on each side to facilitate faster swaps, though this relies on sufficient capital. Atomic swaps facilitate direct, peer-to-peer cryptocurrency exchanges across different blockchains without any centralized intermediary. The “atomic” nature ensures transactions either fully execute or completely revert, preventing partial failures.

These swaps primarily leverage Hash Timelock Contracts (HTLCs), which act as cryptographic escrow accounts. A secret hash locks funds from both parties, with the transaction completing only when the secret is revealed by one party, allowing the other to claim their assets.

Wrapped Tokens and Their Role

Wrapped tokens enable assets from one blockchain to be used on another by creating a compatible representation. For example, Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) allows Bitcoin to function within the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem.

An asset, like Bitcoin, gets locked in a smart contract on its native chain, and an equivalent token is minted at a 1:1 ratio on the target blockchain. This wrapped token can then engage in DeFi applications, later burned to redeem the original asset.
