Ethereum (ETH) is grappling with significant selling pressure, as spot Ethereum Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) recorded net outflows exceeding $1.1 billion throughout October. This substantial capital exodus signals a palpable shift in institutional sentiment, casting a darker shadow over the immediate price outlook for the second-largest cryptocurrency.

The majority of these withdrawals, particularly from BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA), have directly reduced buying support in the spot market. Investors are pulling funds amid broader macroeconomic concerns and Ether’s sustained underperformance against Bitcoin.

Ethereum ETFs billion outflow

October proved to be a challenging month for US spot Ethereum ETFs, with net withdrawals reaching approximately $1.08 billion by October 21. By October 22, total outflows had surpassed $1 billion, culminating in an estimated $1.1 billion exit over three weeks as of October 23, 2026.

This sustained trend saw a fifth consecutive day of net withdrawals leading up to October 20, with only intermittent, modest inflows temporarily stemming the tide. These figures underscore weakening short-term institutional demand for Ether-linked investment products.

BlackRock’s ETHA Dominates Outflow Figures

BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) emerged as the primary catalyst behind the significant capital flight. The fund alone accounted for nearly 83% of total outflows by October 16, bleeding approximately $796.2 million in net withdrawals that month.

By October 19, ETHA saw a notable $95.4 million removed, contributing to the day’s total of $103.3 million in Ethereum ETF outflows. The fund’s dominance in this negative trend was further highlighted by its approximate $1.01 billion exit over three weeks, representing about 93% of all outflows during that period.

ETHA’s net assets consequently plummeted from roughly $9.9 billion on October 5 to around $7.8 billion by October 23. The fund’s structure, which notably does not stake its Ether holdings to generate staking rewards, may be contributing to its unattractiveness compared to other investment avenues or direct staking opportunities.

Investors looking at alternatives to simply holding Ether might consider Ethereum staking offers rewards and withdrawal options for yield.

While other funds experienced outflows, their impact was comparatively smaller. Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) shed $18.3 million during the week of October 12-16, and Franklin Templeton’s EZET saw $900,000 in outflows. Conversely, Fidelity’s FETH attracted $3.63 million on October 20 and $10.5 million during the week of October 12-16, offering a minor counter-narrative to the prevailing selling pressure.

Ethereum Price Slides Amid Selling Pressure

The exodus of capital from spot Ethereum ETFs has directly correlated with a pronounced downturn in Ether’s market value. By October 21, ETH was trading around $2,450, after briefly dipping below $2,400. This followed an earlier fall to roughly $2,360-$2,384, which pushed the cryptocurrency below its crucial 50-day moving average of $2,550.

As of October 18, ETH had fallen approximately 13% from its October 5 peak of about $2,726, and about 11% from its October 1 opening price. The past two weeks leading up to October 21 saw Ether lose 11.5% of its value, significantly underperforming Bitcoin, which declined 4.4% over the same period.

This underperformance is reflected in the ETH/BTC ratio, which currently sits at around 0.02934, indicating Ethereum’s weakening position relative to Bitcoin. The total price slide for Ethereum in October amounted to 9.7%, moving from $2,700 down to $2,438. Overall, ETH was down nearly 18% throughout 2026, highlighting a persistent bearish trend.

Factors Fuelling Institutional Exodus

Several factors have converged to intensify institutional selling and fuel the widespread outflows from Ethereum ETFs. A broader pullback in risk appetite, exacerbated by macroeconomic concerns, appears to be a significant driver. For instance, US September inflation settled at 3.7%, strengthening expectations that interest rates will remain elevated for a longer duration, making riskier assets like cryptocurrencies less attractive.

Moreover, Ethereum’s underperformance compared to Bitcoin has prompted some investors to reallocate their holdings. The delayed “Glamsterdam” network upgrade for Ethereum may also be contributing to the dampened enthusiasm, as developmental milestones are often key drivers of investor interest and confidence.

Another element at play is the competition from staking yields. Unlike some other crypto investment vehicles, BlackRock’s ETHA does not offer staking rewards, which means investors might be seeking higher returns elsewhere. This could be prompting a shift towards direct staking or other yield-generating opportunities within the crypto ecosystem, rather than holding non-yielding ETF shares.

Bitcoin ETFs Chart a Different Course

The narrative surrounding Bitcoin ETFs in October stands in stark contrast to their Ethereum counterparts. While both asset classes experienced combined outflows of $549 million in the week ending around October 18, with Ether funds accounting for $320 million and Bitcoin funds $229 million, Bitcoin has since staged a notable turnaround.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted more than $1.07 billion in net inflows over three trading sessions earlier in October, effectively reversing an earlier outflow trend. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) spearheaded this resurgence, recording $665.2 million in inflows on a single Monday, marking its largest daily intake since October 2025.

On October 21, IBIT pulled in another $235 million, complemented by Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) which received $212.7 million. These contrasting flows suggest that, despite broader market jitters, investors have decidedly favored Bitcoin-linked products over Ether funds during this period. Macroeconomic factors often influence these trends, as detailed in how macroeconomic indicators influence Bitcoin’s price.

Market Outlook and Potential Downside

The current wave of Ethereum ETF outflows presents a clear indicator of weakening institutional demand in the short term. Analysts are now closely watching key technical levels to gauge the potential for further price depreciation. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) for Ethereum has dropped to 35.98, nearing oversold territory, which could suggest an impending rebound but also highlights current bearish momentum.

Market watchers suggest that a daily close below $2,360 would significantly heighten the risk of Ether sliding further towards the $2,200 mark. Conversely, reclaiming the $2,550 level, previously a key moving average, could help stabilize the outlook and signal a potential bottom. Santiment, a crypto analytics firm, identifies $2,500 as a strengthening point for a bottoming scenario, with $2,330 representing a weakening of that case.

Key support levels for Ether are currently identified between $2,351 and $2,355, while resistance lies at $2,445 and $2,500. The upper range resistance is approximately $2,575. Navigating these levels will be crucial for Ethereum’s near-term price action, particularly if the outflow trend persists.

While the immediate outlook is challenging, the broader Ethereum ecosystem continues to evolve, with ongoing developments aiming to enhance network efficiency and scalability long-term. This includes projects like Fhenix’s encrypted smart contracts, even as the “Glamsterdam” network upgrade faces delays.

Despite the current October reversals, it is worth noting that both Bitcoin and Ether ETFs still maintained net inflows for 2026 overall, with Bitcoin ETFs at about $259 million. This suggests that the current downturn might be a recalibration rather than a complete loss of confidence, but the immediate pressure on Ether remains undeniable.
