Ethereum (ETH) experienced its most significant daily exchange outflows in over four months on October 23, 2026, with 169,770 ETH, valued at approximately $407 million, moving off centralized platforms. This substantial withdrawal, tracked by Santiment, often signals a potential price rebound as less supply becomes readily available for selling.

Yet, the cryptocurrency faces a complex array of countervailing forces, including aggressive selling by long-term investors and institutional funds, suggesting its price could still test the critical $2,300 support level.

Institutional Selling Drives Ethereum Outflows

The latest outflow event echoes a similar surge in withdrawals on June 5, 2026, when roughly 223,800 ETH left exchanges, preceding a notable price recovery. While such patterns typically bolster bullish sentiment, current market dynamics, including persistent selling pressure in the derivatives market and significant outflows from US spot Ethereum ETFs, introduce considerable uncertainty into Ethereum’s immediate trajectory.

The recent spike in Ethereum outflows from centralized exchanges, a four-month high, initially appeared to be a bullish signal for market observers. Santiment Intelligence noted the withdrawal of 169,770 ETH on October 23, 2026. This type of movement often implies that investors are moving assets to cold storage, signaling a long-term holding strategy rather than an intent to sell.

However, a closer look reveals that institutional selling has been a dominant force, complicating the narrative. US spot Ethereum ETFs have witnessed a significant exodus of capital, recording over $1 billion in net outflows between October 1 and October 22. Farside Investors reported that 14 out of 16 sessions during this period saw negative flows, indicating sustained pressure from large-scale investors.

Notably, BlackRock’s ETHA fund alone accounted for $29.3 million in net outflows on October 22. This institutional selling has continued unabated, with another $110.5 million leaving funds on October 24, placing US spot Ethereum ETFs on track for their fourth consecutive week of net outflows. Such sustained selling by major players can undermine any potential recovery sparked by on-chain withdrawals.

These large withdrawals from regulated funds signal a shift in institutional sentiment, moving against the perceived bullishness of general exchange outflows. Whale Activity and Futures Market Bearishness

Adding another layer of complexity to Ethereum’s market dynamics is the notable selling activity from some of its earliest and largest investors, colloquially known as “whales.” On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain highlighted several significant transactions where long-term holders cashed out substantial amounts of ETH.

One early investor, who originally purchased tokens nine years ago at $18.83 each, sold 3,000 ETH, valued at approximately $7.23 million. This sale represented a staggering 128-fold return on their initial investment. Another participant from Ethereum’s initial coin offering (ICO) offloaded 1,000 ETH from an original purchase of 100,000 tokens at roughly $0.31 per token.

These sales by prominent long-term holders underscore a renewed willingness among early adopters to take profits, contributing to the broader selling pressure. This counteracts the bullish interpretation of generalized exchange outflows, suggesting that while some retail investors may be withdrawing ETH for holding, influential whales are actively liquidating positions.

Derivatives Market Signals Continued Selling

Beyond spot market movements and whale transactions, the derivatives market for Ethereum also paints a bearish picture. Data from CryptoQuant analytics reveals that Ethereum’s Futures Taker Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD) continues to show seller dominance. This indicator measures the cumulative divergence between market buy and sell orders across the futures markets for ETH.

A seller-dominant reading signifies that aggressive sellers are consistently outweighing buyers. This persistent selling pressure in the futures market stands in stark contrast to the narrative of reduced selling supply implied by the exchange outflows. Such positioning could effectively invalidate any recovery prospects, especially if aggressive futures selling persists.

Ethereum Price Action and Critical Support Levels

Ethereum’s price action on the daily timeframe chart has shown persistent weakness. The altcoin failed to sustain an earlier recovery toward the $2,540.68 price level, subsequently pulling back to $2,376.62. This move saw ETH lose its key support at the $2,385.62 level, a critical threshold for market stability.

Bulls have made repeated attempts to stabilize the price around this zone, but they haven’t managed to establish a convincing rebound. The current technical indicators further reinforce a bearish outlook. The Parabolic SAR indicator, for instance, remains above the prevailing market value at $2,509.93, suggesting continued downward momentum.

Furthermore, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator maintains a bearish crossover. Its negative histogram reading of -8.90 provides additional validation that bears currently hold the technical advantage. Analysts like Ted Pillows have noted Ethereum testing support at its 100-week Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

The combination of these bearish technical signals outweighs the potentially bullish implications of exchange withdrawals for now. Crypto analyst CryptoBusy has identified the region between $2,350 and $2,480 as an important support area.

Unless buyers can reclaim the $2,385 support, there’s a significant risk that ETH could face a further price decline, potentially testing the $2,300 mark or even falling toward the on-chain cost basis of $2,311.

Macroeconomic Headwinds and Liquidation Cascades

Ethereum’s struggle to maintain its price is exacerbated by broader macroeconomic factors and significant liquidation events across the crypto market. Geopolitical tensions and elevated oil prices have contributed to a cautious sentiment among investors, leading to a general de-risking across asset classes, including cryptocurrencies.

Rising Treasury yields and a strengthening dollar further pressure crypto valuations, making riskier assets like Ethereum less attractive to institutional capital. These external factors create a challenging environment for any sustained price recovery, regardless of individual crypto-specific metrics.

The bearish sentiment has also triggered substantial liquidation cascades. On October 23, 2026, approximately $75.4 million in ETH liquidations occurred, with $63.7 million stemming from leveraged long positions. An earlier one-hour $106 million long liquidation on Binance effectively pushed the price through crucial support levels, accelerating the downward trend.

Another significant event on October 7, 2026, saw $201 million in Ethereum liquidations as part of a broader $665 million crypto market sell-off. These forced sales from leveraged positions add intense, sudden downward pressure, making it difficult for ETH to find a stable footing. The ongoing liquidations highlight the fragility of the market and the high leverage many traders are employing.

The Path Ahead for Ethereum Amidst Contradictory Signals

Ethereum finds itself at a critical juncture, navigating contradictory market signals. While the recent four-month high in exchange outflows traditionally suggests a looming supply shock and potential price appreciation, this bullish interpretation is heavily counteracted by persistent institutional selling via ETFs, significant profit-taking by early “whale” investors, and sustained bearish positioning in the derivatives market.

This intricate balance of forces makes the future price trajectory of ETH highly uncertain.

For a sustained recovery to take hold, Ethereum would need to see a significant reversal in institutional flows, with US spot Ethereum ETFs shifting from consistent withdrawals to net inflows. Overcoming key resistance levels, such as the 20-day moving average around $2,491 and the 50-day average at $2,548, would also be essential.

Analysts like Daan Crypto suggest that without a significant move higher, the long-term outlook remains bearish.

The Coinbase Premium Index, currently at its lowest level since June 2026 at -0.137, indicates weaker demand or active selling originating from US-based markets. This metric further emphasizes the regional disparities in investor sentiment impacting ETH price.

Meanwhile, Bitmine, a significant holder, reported 6,041,481 ETH as of October 18, 2026, with nearly 84% of it staked, reflecting a long-term commitment despite market volatility. However, the influence of these large, staked holdings on immediate market price action remains limited compared to active selling pressure.

Should the prevailing selling trends persist and Ethereum fail to hold the $2,385 support, further declines are likely, potentially pushing the asset below $2,349 and re-testing the crucial $2,313 support level, which represents the average on-chain cost basis for ETH.

The outcome of this tug-of-war between speculative long-term holding and aggressive short-term selling will ultimately determine whether Ethereum can avert a deeper price correction. Understanding the mechanics of staking and its implications for network stability is crucial context for investors, as explored in articles like understanding Ethereum staking rewards.
