The MultiversX network is preparing for a significant architectural overhaul, scheduling its “Supernova” upgrade for September 10. The event will include a planned 24-minute pause in new transaction processing on its mainnet. This temporary halt is a critical step in an ambitious plan to boost the blockchain’s speed by a factor of ten.

If successful, the upgrade will slash block times from the current six seconds to just 600 milliseconds. This move places MultiversX in the escalating race for higher throughput among Layer-1 blockchains. The competitive environment sees ongoing advancements, such as a recent Uniswap liquidity surge. The Supernova upgrade itself requires a coordinated effort across the entire network of validators.

Understanding the MultiversX Supernova upgrade

The Supernova upgrade is more than a simple tweak to block times; it represents a fundamental re-architecting of the network’s core logic. The update restructures the consensus pipeline, allowing validators to vote on a proposed block while the execution of its transactions proceeds in parallel. This change effectively removes transaction processing from the critical path that previously determined the speed of block production.

This new design aims to deliver substantial gains in finality, which is the guarantee that a transaction cannot be altered or reversed. MultiversX projects that intra-shard finality will drop below 250 milliseconds. Furthermore, cross-shard settlement times are expected to plummet from approximately 18 seconds to a mere 2.4 seconds, dramatically improving the experience for cross-chain applications.

Crucially for developers and users, the team has engineered the upgrade to maintain backward compatibility. All existing addresses, cryptographic keys, and account balances will remain unchanged, a decision intended to prevent a disruptive and complex migration process that often accompanies major network changes. The core epoch length of the chain will also be preserved.

MultiversX Supernova migration: high stakes for validators

The success of the Supernova upgrade hinges on a massive coordination effort. Over 5,000 node operators must migrate their systems to the new software before the activation deadline. This migration window, running from September 1 to September 10, is a critical period for the network’s validator community.

Early data from September 1 revealed the scale of the task ahead. At that time, over 95% of the network’s 5,171 nodes were still running the older software version. While this is not necessarily indicative of a delay, it establishes a clear baseline against which the community’s progress can be measured in the final days before the switch.

The stakes for validators are high. MultiversX’s guidance warns that running outdated software after Supernova activates could lead to a node interpreting transactions differently from the majority chain. This could cause a loss of synchronization, effectively cutting the non-compliant node off and impacting network stability. Such processing changes highlight the critical importance of a fully coordinated upgrade.

How MultiversX’s goals stack up against Solana and the competition

MultiversX’s target of a 600-millisecond block time marks a massive improvement, highlighting the intense competition among Layer-1 protocols. The upgrade positions MultiversX closer to Solana, which currently operates with a block time of around 400 milliseconds. Other networks also see significant activity, such as when an Arbitrum token soared recently. Solana has long been a leader in high-speed blockchain performance.

Solana, however, isn’t standing still. It’s undergoing a phased rollout to reduce its block time, aiming to eventually halve it to just 200 milliseconds. This continuous push for lower latency demonstrates how top-tier chains innovate to attract developers and users. The demand for near-instantaneous transactions remains a key driver in this evolving market.

This race for speed extends across the industry. The Sei Network, for example, has been rolling out its “Giga” upgrade, which targets sub-400ms finality and a theoretical throughput of 200,000 transactions per second. For MultiversX, the Supernova upgrade is not just about improving its own technology; it’s about remaining relevant and competitive in a market that defines itself by speed and efficiency.

Market reaction and the path to activation

The announcement of the upgrade appears to have generated positive momentum for MultiversX’s native token, EGLD. Over the preceding weekend, the token’s price crossed the $4.00 mark for the first time since May, reaching a high of $4.05 before a slight pullback. This price action suggests a degree of speculative interest from traders betting on a successful upgrade.

The planned 24-minute transaction pause is a carefully managed component of the transition. It is scheduled to occur over approximately 240 rounds under the old six-second clock. This downtime is a deliberate measure, allowing the network to clear all in-flight transactions before new, faster rules take effect.

Any new transactions submitted during this brief window will remain queued and processed once Supernova is live. This event underscores the constant evolution within the crypto space. Entities are always seeking enhancements, such as how some are boosting Ethereum stake. The entire process is set to culminate on September 10 during epoch 2233, with activation pegged to round 32,157,661.

In the coming days, observers will be closely watching the public network data to see if the validator community can achieve near-full migration to the new software. A smooth transition could validate MultiversX’s architectural choices and bolster its standing, while any significant stumbles could erode confidence and set back its competitive ambitions.
