Ethereum’s block production is undergoing a fundamental shift with the implementation of Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS). This critical architectural change aims to significantly enhance the network’s decentralization and mitigate the centralizing effects of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). By restructuring how blocks are created and added to the blockchain, PBS promises a more equitable and robust future for Ethereum.

The move represents a concerted effort to address long-standing concerns regarding validator centralization and the potential for transaction ordering manipulation. It’s a vital evolution for Ethereum, particularly after its transition to a Proof-of-Stake system, ensuring the integrity and fairness of the network as it scales.

How Proposer-Builder Separation Works

Proposer-Builder Separation redefines the roles involved in creating and validating new blocks on the Ethereum blockchain. Instead of a single validator handling both tasks, these responsibilities are now divided between two distinct entities. This division fosters a more competitive and transparent environment for block construction.

The core principle behind PBS is to prevent any single party from accumulating excessive power over transaction ordering. Such power could lead to significant, undue profits. The separation is therefore essential for maintaining a healthy, decentralized network, especially as Ethereum’s ecosystem grows in complexity and value.

Defining the Roles: Builders and Proposers

At the heart of the PBS mechanism are two specialized roles: block builders and block proposers. Block builders are the first line, responsible for gathering, validating, and arranging transactions into a complete block body. They meticulously optimize block space and gas usage, strategically ordering transactions to maximize their profitability.

Conversely, block proposers are the validators selected by the protocol to propose new blocks to the network. In a PBS system, their role becomes significantly streamlined. Proposers select the most profitable block body offered by builders, append necessary metadata like the block header, and confirm the block’s overall validity.

The Auction Model for Block Inclusion

The interaction between these two distinct roles unfolds through an innovative auction mechanism. Block builders submit bids for their carefully constructed block bodies, vying for the proposer’s selection. The proposer then rigorously evaluates these submissions and chooses the highest bid, receiving a direct fee from the winning builder.

This competitive market ensures that the economic benefits associated with block construction are distributed more broadly across the network. It also strongly incentivizes builders to continuously create highly efficient and optimized blocks, which ultimately contributes to a more robust and responsive Ethereum network.

Decoupling MEV for a Healthier Network

Maximal Extractable Value (MEV), initially known as “miner extractable value,” refers to the profit a transaction-orderer can capture by reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions within a block. Historically, MEV has posed a significant challenge to Ethereum’s decentralization goals.

In Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake system, validators traditionally held the dual responsibility of both building and proposing blocks. This created an inherent incentive for centralization, as validators with more substantial resources could better optimize for MEV extraction. Proposer-Builder Separation directly addresses this critical issue.

Why MEV is a Centralization Risk

The ability to extract MEV has, in the past, given large, sophisticated validators a considerable advantage. They could deploy advanced infrastructure and algorithms to identify and capitalize on profitable transaction reordering, creating an uneven playing field. This concentration of MEV extraction power threatened to centralize the validator set.

Such centralization poses risks to censorship resistance and overall network security. If a few powerful entities control a significant portion of block production, they could potentially manipulate transactions or exclude certain participants. PBS aims to diffuse this power, fostering a more secure environment for staked Ether holders and users alike.

Distributing MEV Rewards More Equitably

PBS fundamentally shifts the primary responsibility for MEV extraction away from validators and towards specialized block builders. While builders still capture these MEV opportunities, they must submit competitive bids to have their blocks accepted by proposers. This fee market ensures that a significant portion of MEV-related income is distributed more broadly.

Validators, now acting as proposers, receive fees from builders for including their blocks, rather than needing to invest heavily in their own MEV-extraction infrastructure. This mechanism effectively reduces the advantage of large entities and promotes a more equitable distribution of resources among all network participants.

The Road to Enshrined PBS and Protocol Integration

While current implementations of Proposer-Builder Separation, such as MEV-Boost by Flashbots, have been instrumental, the ultimate goal for Ethereum is Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS). This aims to integrate the separation mechanism directly into the Ethereum protocol itself, formalizing its rules and eliminating reliance on external services.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, and other researchers have been actively involved in proposals like Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 7732. This EIP outlines a path for ePBS, moving beyond intermediary services like relays to create a more trustless and robust system for block production.

Eliminating Trust Assumptions with ePBS

Current PBS implementations often rely on trusted relays that connect builders and proposers, aggregating blocks and forwarding the most profitable ones. While effective, this introduces a trust assumption where relays could potentially censor or manipulate information. Enshrined PBS seeks to remove this vulnerability.

By integrating PBS directly into the core protocol, ePBS would eliminate the need for these external services. This move significantly reduces trust assumptions, making the system more resilient to potential attacks or single points of failure. It strengthens the decentralization ethos that underpins Ethereum.

Cryptoeconomic Accountability and New Mechanisms

Enhanced Proposer-Builder Separation also introduces innovative architectural principles designed to bolster cryptoeconomic accountability. In each 12-second consensus slot, validators, acting as proposers, conduct an on-chain auction among builders.

Builders submit signed “BuilderBid” transactions containing vital information like slot details, parent hash, bid value, and their staking identity. Proposers select the highest bid and broadcast a “SelectionMsg,” leading to the builder revealing the execution payload.

Mechanisms like the Payload Timeliness Committee (PTC) ensure accountability, with slashing for late or invalid payloads, enhancing network integrity. Builders can be staked for as little as 1 ETH, with a minimum withdrawnability delay of 64 epochs.

Remaining Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite its significant advantages, Proposer-Builder Separation, particularly in its journey towards full enshrinement, still faces notable challenges. These include the potential for builder centralization and risks to network liveness, which require continuous monitoring and mitigation strategies.

Ensuring the continuous operation and timely block production is crucial, especially in the face of potential network issues or builder failures. These considerations are vital as Ethereum pushes towards a fully integrated and decentralized block production framework.

Builder Centralization and Liveness Risks

Even with PBS designed to distribute rewards, there remains a risk of centralization among block builders. The highly competitive nature of MEV extraction could still lead to a few dominant builders capturing the majority of opportunities. This potential concentration warrants ongoing attention from the Ethereum community and developers.
