Solana (SOL) surged past the $120 milestone on September 25, 2026, for the first time in nearly eight months. The cryptocurrency reached as high as $122.33 during trading, driven by significant exchange-traded fund (ETF) demand and the anticipation surrounding the Alpenglow Network Upgrade. This impressive rally confirms that Solana breaks 120, marking a significant recovery.

This notable price movement reflects renewed investor confidence in the Solana ecosystem. It marks a critical recovery point for SOL, which had not traded above $120 since January 29 of this year.

Solana breaks 120 as institutional demand surges

Institutional interest in Solana has shown remarkable consistency, with Solana ETFs recording net inflows for twelve consecutive weeks. This sustained demand highlights a growing appetite among larger investors for digital assets beyond Bitcoin.

On September 24, 2026, United States spot Solana ETFs saw $32.81 million in net inflows. Bitwise’s Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) led this surge, accounting for a substantial $27.97 million, while Fidelity’s FSOL attracted an additional $4.84 million.

These recent additions have pushed cumulative historical net inflows across Solana funds to approximately $1.52 billion as of September 25. Total assets under management (AUM) for these combined funds now stand at an estimated $1.81 billion.

August 2026 also proved to be a robust period for Solana ETF demand, delivering over $170 million in inflows. This steady flow positions Solana as a key indicator for institutional interest in the broader altcoin market, moving beyond the established dominance of Bitcoin.

Alpenglow Upgrade Promises Faster Transactions

A major technological advancement, the Alpenglow network upgrade, is poised to significantly enhance Solana’s performance. It aims to drastically reduce transaction finality, from an average of 12.8 seconds to a mere 150 milliseconds.

This improvement is achieved by altering the fundamental way validators exchange votes. Much of the voting communication will now occur off-chain, streamlining the transaction verification process and boosting efficiency across the network.

The Alpenglow consensus upgrade officially went live on devnet on September 25, 2026. This followed a successful testnet transition completed just a day prior, on September 24, with the Solana Foundation confirming its activation on two public testnets.

Mainnet Rollout and Fault Tolerance Boost

The mainnet launch for Alpenglow is tentatively scheduled for September 28, 2026. Anza, Solana’s core software developer, has noted this date is provisional, as the upgrade will only activate once 95% of staked SOL runs the new software version.

Solana’s official roadmap also targets both the Agave 4.3 and Alpenglow upgrades for October 2026. However, such large-scale consensus upgrades can face delays if extensive testing uncovers unexpected behaviors or compatibility issues.

Beyond speed, the Alpenglow upgrade is also projected to bolster the network’s fault tolerance. It is expected to increase this critical metric from 28.8% to 40%, making the network more resilient against potential disruptions.

Anza has urged application developers to rigorously test their programs and integrations. This ensures seamless functionality now that Alpenglow is live and operational on the devnet.

Broader Ecosystem Growth Fuels Rally

The recent price surge isn’t solely attributable to ETF demand and the Alpenglow upgrade. Solana’s broader ecosystem has also witnessed substantial growth, contributing to investor optimism.

The market capitalization of stablecoins held on Solana has reached a new high, now standing at approximately $17.39 billion. This indicates increasing utility and liquidity within the network for everyday transactions and decentralized finance applications.

Furthermore, real-world assets (RWA) tokenized on the Solana blockchain have expanded significantly, exceeding $4.5 billion. This integration of traditional financial assets onto the blockchain signals a maturing ecosystem and broader adoption.

Solana futures open interest has also seen a notable uptick, nearing $7.49 billion, representing about a 14% increase from early September’s $6.57 billion. Futures trading volume concurrently reached roughly $11.76 billion over 24 hours, up from $9.38 billion earlier in the month.

This expanded activity across stablecoins, tokenized assets, and payments underscores Solana’s growing prominence. It reflects robust engagement and diverse use cases, positioning the network for continued expansion.

Looking Ahead for Solana’s Trajectory

The breach of the $120 mark is a significant psychological and technical milestone for Solana, suggesting potential for further upward movement. Its performance contrasted with the broader crypto market on September 25, which saw only about a 2% gain overall.

While Bitcoin struggled to hold $84,000, trading around $83,800, and Ethereum hovered near $2,687, Solana demonstrated independent strength. This institutional appetite underscores a growing trend of investors seeking exposure to cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin, a sentiment often discussed in debates on institutional demand durability.

Analysts will be closely watching for the full activation of the Alpenglow upgrade on mainnet. Its successful implementation could further enhance Solana’s appeal as a high-performance blockchain, attracting more developers and users to its rapidly evolving ecosystem.

The consistent inflow into Solana ETFs, combined with technological advancements and expanding network metrics, paints a positive picture. It suggests that the recent Solana network activity is not merely speculative but is underpinned by fundamental growth and increasing utility.
