XRP’s price is currently locked in a critical battle around the $1.29 mark, struggling to maintain its footing after a broader retreat this month. This price weakness arrives as its substantial $2.77 billion futures market experiences a notable loss of momentum, signaling a cautious, if not bearish, sentiment among derivatives traders.

Sellers have firmly taken control, pushing the digital asset down roughly 3% from yesterday’s close and 6% over the past week. Technical indicators are now pointing to continued vulnerability for the cryptocurrency, raising questions about a potential rebound.

XRP Price Retreats from Earlier Highs

The cryptocurrency, designed to facilitate cross-border payments, is currently trading near $1.29 on 2026-10-18, a significant pullback from its late September peak of approximately $1.65. Early in 2026, XRP had even briefly pushed above $2.30, marking a period of stronger bullish conviction.

This recent decline reflects a tough week for XRP holders, with the asset falling 6.5% between October 9 and 16, according to XRP Insights. CoinGecko’s rolling seven-day reading corroborates this, showing a decline of roughly 7% to 8% for the same period. For investors tracking global markets, the price also registered a 1.7% decline against the Pakistani Rupee, settling at ₨352.17.

The immediate technical support for XRP lies at $1.27, a level that buyers are vigorously attempting to defend. However, resistance looms toward $1.35, with specific barriers identified at $1.305 and $1.313. Should XRP successfully reclaim these higher levels, it could improve the asset’s short-term outlook and potentially spark renewed buyer interest.

Futures Market Activity Cools Off

The derivatives landscape for XRP is flashing warning signs, with its open interest in futures contracts hovering around $2.77 billion. This figure, while substantial, represents a 1.32% decline over the preceding 24 hours, indicating a retreat among derivatives traders. The equivalent of roughly 2.14 billion XRP tokens are currently held in these open contracts.

Major exchanges like CME and Binance lead the pack in XRP futures open interest. CME accounts for $494.04 million, closely followed by Binance at $491.05 million. Combined, these two platforms represent approximately 35.6% of the total futures market, making their activity a key indicator of market sentiment. Traders often watch Bitcoin derivatives as a bellwether for wider market trends, and similar analysis applies to XRP.

Further underscoring this cautious sentiment is the taker buy/sell ratio, which stands at 0.883. This metric reveals that market participants are executing more aggressive selling orders than buying orders. It suggests an inclination to offload positions quickly rather than accumulate, contributing to the downward price pressure.

Prediction Markets Signal Skepticism

The fading optimism in the XRP market is also evident in prediction platforms, which offer insights into collective trader expectations. Polymarket, a prominent prediction market, currently assigns a 50% probability to XRP touching the $1.20 mark before the end of November.

Similarly, October contracts on Kalshi reflect increasingly dim expectations for a meaningful rebound within the month. These platforms aggregate diverse market participants’ views, and their current readings highlight a palpable skepticism regarding XRP’s immediate recovery prospects.

XRP Investment Funds Experience Outflows

The institutional investment landscape for XRP mirrors the broader market’s apprehension, with dedicated investment funds reporting net withdrawals. During the five trading sessions concluding October 16, US XRP investment funds collectively saw approximately 1.8 million XRP, valued at roughly $2.3 million, pulled out.

Despite these outflows, the combined holdings across these funds remain substantial, totaling 1.19 billion XRP. Their assets under management (AUM) stood at $1.56 billion at the settled Friday close on October 16. A separate tracker for US spot XRP ETFs recorded similar trends, with around $1.8 million in net outflows for the same period and $1.47 billion in AUM.

Friday, October 16, was particularly challenging for these funds, marking approximately 2.84 million XRP leaving tracked investment vehicles. This continued divestment from institutional products adds another layer of pressure to the XRP price battle.

Technical Indicators Point to Further Weakness

From a technical analysis perspective, XRP’s recent price action paints a clear picture of struggle. The one-hour chart illustrates the cryptocurrency’s inability to mount a convincing recovery after briefly touching $1.27. Attempts to reclaim the crucial $1.30 level have repeatedly failed to attract the necessary trading volume for a sustained upward move.

XRP has been exhibiting a pattern of lower highs and lower lows since late September, retreating from an approximate peak of $1.413. This creates a descending channel, a bearish formation that typically indicates continued price depreciation. Rebounds within this channel have consistently met stiff resistance, first between $1.31 and $1.32, and then at a more formidable barrier around $1.34 to $1.35.

Adding to the concern, trading volume has generally diminished during this latest period of consolidation, suggesting a lack of strong conviction from either buyers or sellers. While oversold oscillators might imply that the market could be shedding speculative excesses, the overarching technical picture remains one of weakness unless key resistance levels are decisively broken.

A confirmed move above $1.305, followed by $1.313, would begin to shift the short-term outlook, but a breakdown beneath $1.285 would likely put the $1.27 support back in immediate play.

Upcoming Catalysts and Broader Context

Beyond immediate price action and market sentiment, several significant events could influence XRP’s trajectory in the coming weeks. The Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision, scheduled for October 28, often sends ripples across all financial markets, including cryptocurrencies. Changes in monetary policy can impact investor appetite for risk assets like XRP.

Domestically for XRP, November 1 marks a scheduled escrow unlock, where an additional 1 billion XRP tokens are set to enter circulation. While Ripple has a history of managing these unlocks to minimize market impact, the sheer volume can introduce a psychological hurdle for investors.

Meanwhile, the XRP Ledger is set for an October 23 software upgrade, fixCleanup3_4_0, which aims to address a security flaw related to token creation. This amendment gained supermajority validator support on October 9, demonstrating the network’s commitment to security.

The broader context for XRP also involves its journey through regulatory challenges and its record high of $3.84 on January 3, 2018. While the historic lawsuit with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) saw a significant ruling that XRP itself is not a security, the asset has yet to recapture its previous glory.

The XRP Ledger’s long-awaited native lending system, however, remains in limbo, stuck below the necessary approval threshold for its amendments. This ongoing delay prevents the activation of a potentially significant utility for the XRP ecosystem. As investors weigh technical signals against upcoming events and foundational developments, the current battle for the $1.30 mark encapsulates a period of profound uncertainty for the digital asset.
