BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, has formally moved to offer investors a new layer of protection against Bitcoin’s notoriously sharp price swings with a new BlackRock Bitcoin ETF. The firm filed a registration statement with the U.S.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 19, 2026, for its iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF, which will trade under the proposed ticker symbol PBIT. This new offering aims to provide upside exposure to Bitcoin while actively working to limit potential losses, a direct response to the cryptocurrency’s recent turbulent performance.

BlackRock Unveils New Bitcoin Protection Strategy

The move comes as Bitcoin continues to navigate a volatile market, having seen its value plummet by roughly 50% from its October 2025 peak. During that same period, a similar fund from rival Calamos Investments demonstrated its effectiveness, losing only a fraction of what Bitcoin itself did.

BlackRock’s initiative signals a growing institutional appetite to make Bitcoin more palatable for a wider range of investors seeking to mitigate risk.

BlackRock’s proposed iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF represents a significant evolution in Bitcoin investment products. Unlike existing spot Bitcoin ETFs, which directly track the cryptocurrency’s price, PBIT will employ a sophisticated managed options strategy. This aims to capture gains when Bitcoin rises, but crucially, it seeks to cap losses during downturns, a feature many investors crave in the often-unpredictable crypto market.

The fund plans to achieve this balance by primarily utilizing call options linked to BlackRock’s own highly successful iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT). In addition to options, PBIT will hold fixed-income investments, generating interest income that further helps cushion against potential losses.

This structure means the new ETF will not directly hold Bitcoin itself, or other Bitcoin exchange-traded products, instead relying on derivatives and traditional assets.

Targeting Downside with Defined Thresholds

One of the key features outlined in the SEC filing is the fund’s target for downside protection. The iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF aims for an initial 10% loss threshold per tranche.

This means that, for a newly started investment tranche within the fund, losses are designed to halt at approximately 10% before factoring in fees.

It’s important to note, however, that this is a target threshold and not a guaranteed limit, meaning investors could still face a partial or total loss of their investment in extreme market conditions.

The fund’s strategy involves using three overlapping sets of options contracts, each starting in different months. Each of these tranches combines purchased call options, which grant the right to buy an asset at a set price, with sold call options at higher strike prices to cap potential gains. This layered approach is designed to provide continuous, albeit capped, exposure to Bitcoin’s performance.

Learning from Calamos’s Pioneering Protected Funds

BlackRock isn’t entering uncharted territory with its protective ETF. Calamos Investments debuted its first trio of protected Bitcoin ETFs in early 2025, effectively blazing a trail in the structured crypto product space.

These early funds offered investors choices ranging from full downside protection to options that limited losses to either 10% or 20% over a defined period. Their performance during Bitcoin’s recent slump has been a significant proof point for the viability of such strategies.

Specifically, Calamos’s Bitcoin Structured Alt Protection ETF – October (CBOO) serves as a compelling example. Since the commencement of its one-year protection period in October 2025, CBOO registered a mere 1% drop.

This performance sharply contrasts with Bitcoin’s broader market movement, which saw the cryptocurrency tumble as much as 52% from its peak of over $124,000. Such results undoubtedly underscored the potential investor demand for similar, loss-mitigating products.

Calamos’s Conservative Investment Blueprint

The success of Calamos’s protected funds stems from a relatively conservative yet effective investment blueprint. These funds typically allocate around 90% of their assets into U.S. Treasuries, providing a stable, low-risk foundation. The remaining portion of the funds is then strategically deployed into Bitcoin-linked options.

This structure allows investors to benefit from Bitcoin’s upward price movements, up to a predetermined cap, while stringently limiting their exposure to significant losses over a specified timeframe.

This strategy resonated with investors seeking exposure to the digital asset without enduring its full volatility. Matt Kaufman, Calamos’s head of ETFs, noted in May that these protected Bitcoin funds had attracted between $10 million and $15 million over several weeks, even as traditional spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced outflows. This indicated a clear market segment hungry for more secure investment avenues within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

BlackRock’s Expanding Bitcoin ETF Ecosystem

The iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF (PBIT) fits squarely into BlackRock’s broader strategy of diversifying its Bitcoin-related product offerings beyond simple price tracking. The firm has been steadily building out an ecosystem of Bitcoin ETFs designed to cater to various investor needs and risk appetites.

Its flagship iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), launched in 2024, has been a monumental success, currently managing over $65 billion in net assets and solidifying its position as the largest cryptocurrency investment vehicle globally.

PBIT is designed to leverage this existing infrastructure and liquidity, with its options strategy directly linked to IBIT or similar Bitcoin-linked assets. This integration creates a synergistic relationship, allowing BlackRock to offer more complex and nuanced investment solutions while building upon the established success of its core Bitcoin product.

The fact that IBIT attracted a substantial $665 million in net inflows on October 19 further highlights the robust underlying demand for BlackRock’s Bitcoin offerings.

Beyond IBIT, BlackRock also introduced the Bitcoin Premium Income Fund (BITA) in June. BITA caters to investors seeking income from their Bitcoin holdings. It achieves this by holding Bitcoin and IBIT shares while selling call options on roughly 25% to 35% of its portfolio to generate monthly income.

This multi-faceted approach demonstrates BlackRock’s commitment to capturing various segments of the crypto investment market, from direct exposure to income generation and now, loss protection. These structured products are critical as the cryptocurrency market matures, offering bitcoin derivatives new relevance to a wider investment base.

Regulatory Pathway and Market Implications

The filing for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF kicks off a formal review process with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. While the registration statement was submitted on October 19, 2026, the fund cannot be sold until the SEC declares the statement effective.

BlackRock has proposed an effective date 75 days after submission, which would place its potential launch in early January 2027, assuming no delays or extended regulatory scrutiny.

The ETF seeks to list on the Nasdaq stock exchange, a prominent venue that would provide broad accessibility to both institutional and retail investors. While the initial management fee remains unspecified, its eventual approval would further legitimize Bitcoin as an asset class within traditional financial structures.

This offering could attract a new wave of cautious investors who have previously been deterred by Bitcoin’s notorious volatility, potentially broadening the market beyond early adopters.

The introduction of products like PBIT could also play a role in stabilizing Bitcoin’s market dynamics by providing more structured avenues for participation. As investors gain access to tools that help manage risk, it could foster greater confidence and potentially reduce the severity of market downturns.

The recent bitcoin market crash underscored the need for such instruments, providing a compelling case for regulatory approval and investor uptake. In an environment where Bitcoin clings to support amidst broader market headwinds, these protective mechanisms become even more vital.

BlackRock’s continued innovation in the Bitcoin ETF space underscores a broader industry trend toward creating more sophisticated and accessible cryptocurrency investment vehicles. This evolution is crucial for integrating digital assets more deeply into the mainstream financial system, offering investors more tailored solutions that align with their individual risk tolerances and financial goals.
