The MultiversX blockchain is back online after a critical five-day halt, but users of its native EGLD token on the popular Kraken exchange remain in limbo. The network resumed block production on September 24 following a shutdown on September 19, which was triggered by an attempted exploit that caused “invalid state changes” on the blockchain.

While the MultiversX team has deployed a recovery upgrade and declared the network stable, Kraken has not yet restored EGLD trading, deposits, or withdrawals. As of September 25, the exchange still listed EGLD pairs in “cancel-only” mode, leaving many token holders unable to access or trade their assets on the platform.

MultiversX disruption and a staged recovery

MultiversX paused its network progression on September 19 after detecting an attempted exploit. The official announcement of this halt was made on September 20. The team identified an exploit targeting a “virtual-machine atomicity issue.” This vulnerability could have allowed an attacker to break the atomic nature of transactions, potentially leading to inconsistent ledger states.

By halting the chain, developers prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. This temporary measure allowed engineers crucial time to diagnose the underlying flaw and develop a robust patch. The immediate action mitigated further risk to the network’s integrity and user assets.

The recovery process involved validating the fix on a “shadow fork,” an isolated replica of the live network. This crucial step ensured the patch’s efficacy under real-world conditions without jeopardizing live funds. It proved a cautious yet essential strategy for managing such security breaches.

On September 24, the network’s technical account, @CodeMultiversX, confirmed the successful deployment of a recovery upgrade. This update marked the resumption of normal network activity. The official MultiversX block explorer subsequently showed new blocks being produced, solidifying confidence in the core on-chain infrastructure.

Kraken’s caution highlights centralized exchange role

Despite the green light from the network’s developers, Kraken has maintained its restrictions on EGLD trading. As one of the largest venues for EGLD, this continued caution significantly impacts market access. The exchange’s incident page reveals that its issues with EGLD funding actually predated the network-wide halt.

Kraken first reported “possible EGLD funding-gateway delays” on September 16. This was three days before MultiversX paused its chain. On September 19, the same day as the halt, Kraken escalated its response, moving all EGLD trading pairs to “cancel-only” mode. Deposits and withdrawals were officially paused at that time.

This “cancel-only” status has not changed, even with the mainnet back online. The situation underscores the significant power and caution exercised by centralized exchanges. They act as crucial gatekeepers between decentralized protocols and the broader market, influencing liquidity and access.

The way platforms handle these situations deeply affects how crypto exchange regulation impacts traders. It also dictates their ability to move funds. Kraken’s conservative stance highlights the regulatory and security pressures these major exchanges face.

The exchange has not provided a specific timeline for reopening its EGLD markets. The MultiversX team acknowledged this reality, warning users that trading on various exchanges might remain paused for several more days. Each platform must conduct its own due diligence, verify wallet integrity, and ensure the patch is stable before re-enabling services.

The anatomy of a VM atomicity exploit

The specific vulnerability targeted by the attacker—a flaw in VM atomicity—represents a sophisticated and dangerous class of bug. Blockchains function as distributed state machines, where atomicity ensures that any complex operation either completely succeeds or entirely fails. There’s no intermediate state, which is critical for maintaining ledger consistency.

If an attacker can circumvent atomicity, they can potentially interrupt a transaction midway. This creates an invalid state on the blockchain. For instance, they might trick a smart contract into releasing funds without recording the corresponding payment.

This effectively enables theft or unauthorized asset creation. Understanding these deep-seated altcoin protocol risks is crucial for anyone active in decentralized finance. Such vulnerabilities highlight the constant need for robust security audits and development practices.

The decision to halt the entire network underscores the severity of such a threat. While disruptive, a temporary pause is vastly preferable to a corrupted ledger. A compromised blockchain could permanently erode user confidence and significantly devalue the project. This incident adds to a long list of protocol-level security challenges.

Divergent timelines create user uncertainty

The widening gap between the network’s restart and the resumption of exchange services cultivates a confusing landscape for users. While on-chain activity is technically possible, the inability to move funds to or from major exchanges effectively isolates the ecosystem. This fragmentation severely impacts liquidity and user accessibility.

Users with funds held on an exchange like Kraken are left waiting for a corporate decision that is entirely out of their hands. This highlights the inherent tension between decentralized network operations and centralized financial intermediaries. The reliance on such platforms introduces a layer of external control.

The fact that Kraken’s initial issues began on September 16 raises pertinent questions. This timeline suggests the exchange’s systems might have detected anomalies related to the vulnerability. This could have occurred even before MultiversX initiated a public halt.

Alternatively, it could have been an unrelated gateway issue that became conflated with the larger network crisis. Without a detailed post-mortem from both parties, the exact sequence of events remains unclear. This lack of transparency can heighten user anxiety during critical periods.

This is not an uncommon scenario in crypto. After major exploits or contentious hard forks, exchanges often take days or even weeks to re-enable services. They must manage technical risk and ensure customer funds are secure. Incidents like this compel a more conservative, risk-averse posture from exchanges, prioritizing security over immediate liquidity.

The road ahead for EGLD holders

For now, the path forward is split, presenting different realities for MultiversX users. Those who control their own private keys retain the ability to transact on the network. However, their interaction with the broader crypto market remains significantly limited without exchange access.

Conversely, EGLD holders with assets stored on Kraken must await the exchange’s internal review and subsequent all-clear. Their access to liquidity is entirely dependent on Kraken’s operational decisions. This creates a dual reality for the asset’s ecosystem.

The incident is a powerful reminder of the complex relationship between decentralized protocols and the centralized platforms providing liquidity and user access. The core development team successfully defended the protocol against a serious threat. But the network’s technical health is only one piece of the broader ecosystem puzzle.

This situation highlights the evolving nature of decentralized governance within crypto projects. It also shows their intricate interaction with traditional financial entities. Full recovery, from a user’s perspective, hinges on key partners like Kraken restoring full functionality.

Until then, the EGLD market remains fragmented. On-chain activity has resumed, but a significant portion of its trading liquidity remains locked behind cautious exchange walls. This ongoing saga underscores the fragility of interconnected crypto ecosystems in the face of security challenges.
