Crypto revenue streams struggle amid trading slowdown

The crypto industry’s search for reliable new revenue streams is proving to be a difficult road. Recent third-quarter earnings from major players like Coinbase, Robinhood, and Circle show that while diversification into payments, stablecoins, and prediction markets is creating growth, it has not yet insulated them from the industry’s classic boom-and-bust trading cycles.

As trading activity slows, these companies are facing intense pressure on profits. The latest financial reports highlight a core challenge: finding and scaling new ventures that can meaningfully replace the once-lucrative fees from spot trading. This pivot is critical for long-term stability in a notoriously volatile market.

Crypto revenue streams face trading slump

The latest earnings reports laid bare the industry’s continued reliance on trading volumes. Coinbase (COIN) saw its transaction revenue fall 23% from the prior year to $590 million. This decline was driven by a 9% drop in consumer spot trading volume and an 8% dip in institutional transaction revenue from the previous quarter.

The story was even starker for Robinhood (HOOD). The company, which expanded aggressively into crypto, reported its crypto trading revenue plunged by 55% year-over-year to just $120 million in the third quarter. The platform’s crypto trading volume fell by 38%, underscoring a broad cooling of retail investor enthusiasm.

This downturn isn’t isolated to specific exchanges. Market-wide data for the third quarter of 2026 revealed a 6% fall in spot volume and an 11% drop in derivatives volume compared to the second quarter. The persistent decline in activity makes the hunt for alternative income sources more urgent than ever for public and private crypto firms.

Prediction markets and new ventures show promise

Despite the trading gloom, there are bright spots. Coinbase’s push into new product categories is beginning to yield results. Its prediction market business, launched in February, has already reached an impressive $200 million in annualized revenue. This has been a key factor in the company maintaining its financial footing.

StoneX analyst Mark Palmer noted that these results “should help to dispel the notion that the company is simply a leveraged bet on crypto trading volumes.” He pointed to Coinbase’s record USDC balances and growing prediction market activity as signs of a more durable business model.

Palmer believes roughly 60% of Coinbase’s net revenue now comes from recurring activities or those not tied to spot trading.

Robinhood has found similar success with its event contracts, a form of prediction market. Revenue from this new product hit $173 million in the third quarter, surprisingly surpassing its crypto trading revenue. The volume for these contracts grew more than sevenfold from the previous year, showing a clear appetite for new, accessible forms of speculation.

Still, not all analysts are convinced. Barclays analyst Benjamin Budish warned that Coinbase’s heavy reliance on spot crypto trading “remains a key challenge.” The profitability of these new ventures is also under scrutiny, with Compass Point’s Ed Engel cautioning that prediction markets, while growing, carry lower profit margins than traditional trading.

The stablecoin squeeze and margin pressure

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has a business model less dependent on trading fees. It primarily earns interest on the reserves backing its stablecoin. However, this model has its own vulnerabilities, particularly to macroeconomic shifts like changing interest rates. As rates declined, Circle’s reserve income fell 8% from a year earlier to $658 million.

The company’s headline revenue number of $865 million, a 17% increase, was misleading. It was propped up by a $182 million windfall from token presales for Arc, its new blockchain. Without that one-time boost, Circle’s revenue would have actually fallen by about 8%, and the company also recently cut its workforce by 5%.

Even for companies like Coinbase that benefit from holding stablecoins, the profits are being squeezed. While Coinbase’s revenue from USDC on its platform grew, the rewards it pays to attract and retain those balances also rose.

Analyst Owen Lau noted that after accounting for these rewards, Coinbase’s stablecoin revenue growth was minimal, stating, “each marginal USDC dollar arrives at a lower margin.” Exploring how new digital assets grow is essential for long-term health.

While Circle reported a 49% year-over-year increase in USDC transaction volume to $13.9 trillion, this surge in usage hasn’t translated directly into higher profits for its partners. It shows that utility and profitability are two very different metrics in the evolving stablecoin ecosystem.

Broader market headwinds and institutional caution

The industry’s pivot is happening against a backdrop of wider market apathy and increasing regulatory scrutiny. Institutional interest, once seen as a powerful growth driver, appears to be waning. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) ended a recent week with $202 million in net outflows, while Ethereum ETFs lost a substantial $431 million.

Even corporate buying has slowed. MicroStrategy’s weekly Bitcoin purchases, which numbered in the thousands earlier in the year, dropped to just a few hundred coins in October. This cooling from institutional players removes a major source of market momentum and liquidity, making organic growth harder to achieve.

The risk of crypto investment fraud also continues to be a major concern for regulators and institutional adopters alike.

The challenges are multifaceted, touching every corner of the market. While some areas like tokenized U.S. Treasuries have seen explosive growth—from around $100 million in January 2023 to over $780 million by December 2023—they remain a niche part of the overall digital asset landscape. These new use cases have not yet reached the scale needed to move the needle for large, publicly traded companies.

The environment demands that companies not only innovate but also build resilient business models that can withstand market volatility and a complex regulatory environment. As investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban noted, millions have invested in crypto because it’s “far cheaper and simpler than investing in stocks,” but the industry is still figuring out its long-term impact and business models.

The long road to diversified crypto profits

The path forward for the crypto industry is one of cautious optimism. The expansion into new financial primitives like decentralized payments, prediction markets, and tokenized real-world assets is undeniably innovative.

These technologies hold the potential to create a more accessible and efficient financial system, a vision articulated by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who believes access to finance “shouldn’t depend on your current location, origin, religion, or race.”

However, the recent earnings reports serve as a reality check. Growth in user activity and transaction volume does not automatically translate to sustainable profits. Companies must navigate thin margins, intense competition, and an ever-present threat from exploits and hacks. The recent discovery of a major crypto theft serves as a stark reminder of the security challenges that persist.

For now, the industry remains in a transitional phase. Companies like Coinbase, Circle, and Robinhood have successfully planted flags in new territories, but they are still heavily reliant on the weather in their home market of speculative trading.

The coming quarters will be crucial in determining whether these new ventures can grow into strong, independent revenue pillars or if they will remain interesting but ultimately secondary side businesses.
