Asset management heavyweight Schroders has launched a tokenized version of its emerging markets debt fund on the Solana blockchain, a landmark move bringing complex, actively managed traditional financial products onto a public network. The launch, facilitated by real-world asset (RWA) protocol Centrifuge, represents the $1.1 trillion firm’s first deployment on the high-speed blockchain.

Announced on November 4, 2026, the product gives institutional investors onchain exposure to the Schroder International Selection Fund (SISF) Emerging Market Bond. This strategy encompasses a diverse portfolio of sovereign, corporate, and local-currency debt from developing nations. It signals a significant maturation of the tokenization space, which has so far been dominated by simpler assets like U.S. Treasury bills.

This initiative pushes the boundaries of institutional tokenization. While the market for tokenized real-world assets has grown to $39 billion, a substantial $14 billion of that is concentrated in low-risk government securities and money market funds. Schroders’ move introduces a far more complex and actively managed asset class to the blockchain ecosystem.

Anil Sood, Chief Strategy and Growth Officer at Centrifuge, highlighted the shift. “Until now, onchain fixed income has largely been built around cash and short-duration government securities,” he noted. Sood explained that this new fund introduces “a fundamentally different source of risk and return,” a crucial step for building more sophisticated onchain capital markets that solve real-world problems for investors.

The structure is designed for sophisticated participants, with a minimum investment of $100,000. It utilizes a tokenized feeder fund with an on-chain share class that invests directly into Schroders’ main emerging market bond fund. This allows investors to hold and manage their positions using blockchain infrastructure while gaining exposure to a traditional, professionally managed portfolio.

How the Tokenized Fund Leverages Solana’s Infrastructure

Centrifuge provides the technical and legal framework for this product. The platform has already tokenized over $750 million in assets, building the on-chain fund structure. This includes necessary compliance tools and smart contracts, allowing traditional financial instruments to operate within a Web3 environment. Investors receive tokenized shares in the feeder fund, representing their stake.

The selection of the Solana network serves as a significant vote of confidence in its underlying infrastructure. Solana, recognized for its rapid transaction speeds and low costs, is increasingly seen as a viable platform for institutional applications demanding high performance.

This move, Schroders’ initial deployment on the network, underscores a broader institutional interest in tokenization and the capabilities of Solana’s architecture for such complex financial products.

Nick Ducoff, Head of Institutional Growth at the Solana Foundation, framed the launch as a pivotal moment. “The arrival of an asset manager like Schroders marks a new stage for onchain capital markets,” Ducoff said. “We are moving beyond tokenized cash products toward a market where sophisticated, actively managed strategies can be issued, distributed and integrated on public blockchain infrastructure.”

A Deliberate Digital Asset Strategy

This isn’t Schroders’ first move into tokenization. The asset manager, boasting over 50 years of experience in emerging markets debt with a team of more than 40 investment professionals, has been methodically developing its digital asset strategy.

In August 2026, the firm gained regulatory approval in Ireland for its initial tokenized share class of a U.S. dollar money market fund, named “Schroders Onchain Active Returns (SOAR).”

Marita McGinley, Schroders’ Operations Chief, described the latest launch as “further evidence of our commitment to developing world-class investment solutions that meet the evolving needs of investors in the digital age.” The goal is to modernize access to specialized asset classes that require deep expertise.

John Mensack, Senior Investment Director for Fixed Income at Schroders, highlighted the unique nature of the underlying assets. “Emerging markets debt is an asset class where experience, local insight and active management are particularly important,” he commented.

He added, “As the digital financial ecosystem develops, we also recognise the importance of bringing relevant emerging markets debt opportunities onchain, helping to make the asset class more accessible and fit for the future.”

The Broadening Scope of Real-World Asset Tokenization

Schroders’ recent initiative is part of a larger movement by traditional financial giants to bring real-world assets onto the blockchain. This wave of tokenization promises to enhance efficiency, increase transparency, and broaden access to diverse investment products. The sector has seen a flurry of activity as major institutions explore the potential of distributed ledger technology.

Centrifuge, the technology partner in this launch, has established itself as a key enabler for TradFi firms entering the space. The company previously partnered with New York Life Investment Management to launch a tokenized high-yield corporate bond fund. It also teamed up with Coinbase to tokenize ETFs, credit funds, and other structured products on the Base network.

The trend of tokenization extends across the industry. Janus Henderson and Centrifuge, for instance, recently launched a Nasdaq-100 fund on Stellar, showcasing how diverse blockchains are utilized to secure asset fund growth with new technology. Federated Hermes has also indicated its intent to issue its first tokenized fund shares in early 2027, suggesting a growing pipeline of onchain financial products.

The Future Integration of Finance

The launch of an actively managed fund by a firm of Schroders’ stature is more than a simple proof-of-concept. It marks a critical step toward integrating complex, real-world financial instruments with the evolving landscape of decentralized finance (DeFi). These tokenized shares could, in the future, be used as collateral in lending protocols, traded on decentralized exchanges, or integrated into automated investment strategies.

This convergence of TradFi and DeFi blurs the lines between two previously separate financial systems. By bringing established, regulated products onchain, institutions are laying the groundwork for a more interconnected and efficient global market. It provides a level of legitimacy and product diversity that the crypto space has long sought.

However, challenges still remain. Widespread adoption will hinge on achieving greater regulatory clarity, ensuring deep liquidity for these new tokenized assets, and fostering institutional comfort with the security of public blockchains. Yet, launches like this one serve as powerful catalysts, demonstrating tangible benefits and paving the way for a future where a significant portion of the world’s assets reside onchain.
